Members of the AMS AJD Club were invited to talk to Juvenile & Probate Judge Saunders. They discussed how to become an attorney, careers in justice, how to make a positive difference in our school community and much more.

AHS Band Director Aaron Backes Participates in 2026 Rose Bowl Parade

Athens City Schools band director Aaron Backes was selected to join a marching band of more than 350 band directors from across North America in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1, 2026. The Saluting America’s Band Directors project brought together band directors and a colorful float to recognize the extraordinary dedication and accomplishments of band directors and music educators everywhere.

The Athens City School District's Andrew Jackson Davison Clubs traveled to Columbus to showcase their past, present and future projects at the Ohio School Board Association annual conference.  The AJD Club was well received and the students spoke eloquently about the local history work that engages them in our community.

Mrs. Shuster's Career Classes celebrated National Be a Teacher Day with creative and fun skits based on assigned teaching scenarios. Following a Career Investigation project, eight students chose teaching as their career. The class enjoyed watching these future leaders demonstrate their skills. #OhioFCCLA #FCCLA #FutureTeacherDay

AASLH Conference
AASLH Conference

Eighth grade social studies teacher Angela Hall spoke at the 2025 AASLH (American Association for State and Local History) Annual Conference with Jessica Cyders (Southeastern Ohio History Center) and Brian Koscho (Invisible Ground) .  Their session was titled "Engagement Over Content:  Field Trips That Develop Historical Thinking Skills and Pride of Place."  Mrs. Hall's social studies classes will begin taking walking field trips this Wednesday.  During these field trips, students will develop historical thinking skills that allow them to expertly analyze primary and secondary sources.  Students will also learn about the history of the Athens Middle School neighborhood including the historically Black westside neighborhood, the W. State Street Cemetery, our community's early economy, and so much more!  If these activities and skills interest your student, please email Mrs. Hall about joining the Middle School Chapter of the Andrew Jackson Davison Club.

Mrs. Hall, AMS Social Studies Teacher and AJD Club Adviser spoke to the Nabby Lee Ames Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  She was awarded certificates and medals for her work in Historic Preservation as well as Excellence in American History as well as a certificate for Outstanding Teacher of American  History in Ohio by the National Society of DAR. She is pictured here with Linda Chiki, Regent of the Nabby Lee Ames Chapter, DAR.

Zhiva O. and Berkeley B. are participating in the Entrepreneurship competition at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Leadership Conference.

They created Paw Parlor, an impressive cat-themed bakery, and developed a comprehensive business plan covering aspects such as business description and demographics, facility management (including utilities and emergency procedures), supplies, equipment, maintenance, insurance, legal compliance, budgeting and funding, personnel management (including an organizational chart), and a marketing strategy.

Angie Hall, AMS Social Studies teacher, was honored at the Mount Zion Black Cultural Center's Annual Meeting on March 23, 2025 with their Beacon of Light Award. The Mount Zion Preservation Society and its members continue to be supportive community stakeholders with the Andrew Jackson Davison Clubs.  They recently brought a great mural project to the High School and Middle School Clubs.  Their commitment to our students and to preserving history make them a true asset to Athens City School District.
